I have recently upgraded Microsoft Office 2000 Professional to Office
Professional 2003. When opening word I receive the following error:
MO Word cannot install the necessary files de to Windows Installer error 1605.
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.
I have tried detect and repair and re-installing the programme but it
continues with this error.
How do I fix this error?

You can encounter this message if you have a global template (a
template in one of your Startup folders) that is corrupt or doesn't
function properly in Word 2003.

Here's a KB article that will provide you with the steps you need to
take to correct the problem:

I am having the same problem and when I follow the instructions in the KB
article, I can not find any templates in the Word Startup folder.

After taking a second look at the article I see it doesn't include the
Office\Startup folder which can also contain templates which are
loaded when Word starts.

So see if there are any templates in the Office\Startup folder which
is located in the Office installation path. It would be something
like:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\STARTUP

That was the solution! There were three files in there and two of them were
causing the error. Thanks!

Thanks for the confirmation and I'm glad to hear you have the issue
resolved. :)

I added some feedback/comments on the KB article regarding the need to
add the Office\Startup folder as well. Now it's just a matter of
seeing if they actually read it and modify the article. ;-)
