Error Messages in Word 2002 When Using "Save To" Function

I am running Word 2002 (came with MS Works, but the program has an XP Office
icon) with Windows XP Pro on a new computer. I'm encountering error messages
in the two following circumstances (file already saved in My Documents):

(1) I want to save the file to a Floppy Disk. I click File, Save As, my list
of documents appears in a window, I right click Send To and a drop-down
window appears. From there I choose the Floppy Drive (A:). I get a message
from Windows Explorer that says, "The Target can not handle this type of
document." It's a Word document.

(2) Similarily, if I try to save the file/document to my CD-RW drive (E:), I
click File, Save As, all as above; however instead of choosing Send To Drive
A, I choose Send To CD Drive (E:). Error message received says Problem
Copying, "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What
do you want Windows to do?" The options are to retry or cancel. Clicking
Retry results in the same error message.

Please help. How do I resolve this error messages?

Thanks,
Syd13

Do not Save to/Open from any removable media.
Always save to the HD and copy from there to the device & v/v.

Hi Rob,

I do save to the Hard Drive (C:) first. Reading over my first message, I see
that isn't clear. Sorry. And then from there I attempt to save to the A and E
drive. That is when I'm getting the error messages.

The Save To/Send To function worked fine on my old computer, which was an
ME, go figure. :)

I apologize as well.
I should have read further and realized that it's not necessarily a Word issue, i.e. you
appear to be in Explorer(?).
Have you Googled using the message "The target can not....."?
I saw a couple of hits but don't know if they apply to your situation.

Also, just wondering, does it work if you (right) drag/drop on the A: drive and select
"copy"?

Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Rob,

No, I'm not in Explorer. I'm in Word. But for some reason Explorer shows up
in the error message.

I'll try the Googling and the drag and drop to A thing you mention and see
if either helps.

I've used Word for years on several different computers and have NEVER come
across this problem. FWIW, I *can* "Send to" the desktop (create a shortcut),
and then I can go to the desktop shortcut and save THAT to a floppy and
CD-RW. I just can't do it within Word itself, which seems so strange. And is
also very irritating. :)

Will report back tomorrow.

It would appear that you are using Save As from inside Word. As Rob's
original reply states, you should never save directly to any form of
removable media. Instead, save to the HD (as you're doing), then open
Windows Explorer and Copy or Send from there to the desired drive. You can
also use these commands from Word's File Open dialog (which is an Explorer
window). I think you're using Save As to open an Explorer window, then
trying to use these right-click commands, but possibly Word is confused
because you started out trying to save.

You SHOULD be able to use either File, Open or File, Save dialogs, find the
saved file, right-click on it and select Send To, 3½" floppy drive. It
worked OK for me in Office XP. However, I cannot test if this function is
still good in W2003 as I don't have a floppy. I use a USB Flash Key for
transporting data.

However, I doubt that copying to a CD-R like this is going to work because
of the delay by Windows preparing the file for packet writing to CD-R. It
isn't safe, even if it did work though.

Hi Suzanne and TF.

I have been saving to a CD-RW from inside Word on an older computer for
years (after first saving to C: drive) - no problem! :) The software that
came with it allows you to format the CD-RW so that it acts like a floppy,
which is very convenient for document backups. I have now discovered that the
software with my new computer (an XP with Sonic Record Now) does not support
this function, so yes, I do have to either send a shortcut to the desktop and
then send to the CD from there (which works) or do the lengthy copy to CD
process. I think I'm going to install my old software, though, because
formatting the CD disk to act like a floppy with my old Adaptec software was
much more efficient than this new, awkward way. The Sonic software takes at
least 60 seconds to burn. The old Adaptec software took 2 seconds.

I Googled the "Target can not handle this type of document" error for the
floppy like Rob suggested and it turns out this is just a glitch error which
was supposedly fixed with SP 2 but clearly hasn't been. :) The documents
STILL copies to the floppy normally, but the message appears. The CD-RW is
more cumbersome. I need to burn by inefficient methods that I'm simply not
used to. Hard to believe that my old Windows ME computer that caused me so
many other problems was actually BETTER in this one way. :)

I did just buy a flash drive and I back up to that, too. Call me insecure,
but I'm a writer and I back up to Floppy, CD-RW *and* a flash drive. There's
nothing worse than losing a day's worth of writing. It never translates the
same again.

Thanks everyone for all your help.
