Error messages on importing data

My database has suddenly stopped having the capabilty to
import data from excel. when i try I recieve the following
error message:

An error occured whilst trying to import file "fliname"
the file was not imported

A typically unhelpful error message. This effect is
limited to this one database, but not to the file I am
trying to import. what on earth is going on?
