Error Messages: What Do They Really Mean?

S

Smmiles

Hello: We recently were puzzled by two error messages that were ocurring. One was the standard "your file has been corrupted...find and use a backup" (my paraphrase). Does this message indicate other problems?

Second one: "The operation cannot be completed because the source file contains invalid project data or the total number of rows would exceed the limit of 1,048,000 rows in project. Validate the data in the source file, insert fewer ones, delete some rows, or consider dividing your project into subprojects to provide more space for tasks and resources." (verbatim).

This was a real head scratcher as the plan involved is relatively small; there are no subprojects, and the rows did not exceed 25. What's going on?

Thanks~

Smmiles,
For the first error message, if you can open the file at all, try saving
it as a Project database and then re-open. If it won't open, you will
most likely need to start over from a backup.

For the second error message, again if you can open the file, save as a
Project database. Sometimes an inadvertent keystroke can generate a
rogue task at an obscure row well below the other real tasks in the
file. One simple way to check this is to do a sort by Unique ID. If
there is a rogue task, it will most likely show up at the bottom of the
sort where you can delete it. Also, I hope you are using "Save As' every
time you save a file. Using the Save icon or just "Save" from the File
menu can cause an ordinarily small file to grow each time because a
"plain" Save performs an append function.

Hope this helps.

If you are using P98 then perhaps this is your problem:

One further possiblility, if you are using P2002 then this might be your
problem:
