error msg document to large to save

Working with Windows XP/Office XP.
Working on a document, went to save it and it tells
me 'document to large to save'. It is only 20 or so
pages, no graphics, no tables. On another try it let me
save it but now will not let me make any changes in it.
I've had to save to a disk to work on it.
HELP.
