Error msg when Word2000 starts

B

blah

I have two XP computers. I recently successfully installed Windows 2000 on
one computer but when I install it on the other computer I get the error msg
that Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close and asks if i want
to send an error report.
Previously this computer had Word 2000 installed, it then would not open so
I installed Word 97, now Word97 has somehow disappeared so that is why I am
trying to install WOrd2000 again.
Both computers are networked together.
I have tried changing the normal.dot file to normal.bak (as stated in the
help guide) but it doesnt work. WHen I type winword.exe /a (as stated in teh
guide) word is able to start.
How can I get Word2000 working on this computer again?
Can I copy the files from my other computer via network to install word on
this computer?

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.

If Word does start properly when you use the /a switch, but renaming
normal.dot doesn't fix it, then the problem is either a bad add-in or
a bad registry entry. The article discusses troubleshooting both of
these things. To check for add-ins, also see
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm
and http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx.

No, you can't install Word on one computer by copying files from the
other computer. Word needs dozens of registry entries, which you get
by running the installer. Besides that, read the license agreement to
see whether it's legal to install the same copy of Word on two
computers. Some Office packages allow that, but others don't.
