Error: New pages cannot have custom names

Hello everyone,

I've recently come across a strange problem when using Visio 2007 on my
office desktop, running Vista x64. Let me detail the steps to create this
problem:

1) Start a new drawing (or open an existing drawing; it occurs either way)
2) Insert a new page, either by right clicking on the page tabs, or going to
Insert -> New page.
3) Name the page, e.g. "Custom Name".
4) When the page is created, the name on the tab is simply "Page-X", where X
is the number of the page.

If you double-click on the page name on the tab, you can rename it.
However, when you go to the Page Properties (via Page Setup), it still shows
as blank. Furthermore, if you try to type a custom name on the Page
Properties tab, this will reset the page name to "Page-X".

I've tried to reinstall Visio 2007, but the behavior has not changed; there
must be some configuration file that is preserved upon uninstall that
contains the erroneous behavior. Does anyone have thoughts on how to fix the
problem? The Microsoft Knowledgebase hasn't given me any leads.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

I don't happen to have a Vista x64 machine available right now, so I tested
on Windows Server 2008 x64 with Visio 2007 SP1, and I did not see the same
thing. However, I did find a
logged issue for this occurring on Vista x64 - when there are ActiveX
controls in the drawing. Unfortunately, while it doesn't repro easily, it
seems to be a sticky condition, as you have found. Visio 2007 is a 32-bit
app, running in the WOW64 environment on a Vista x64 system, and it appears
this is one area where the app and the OS are in conflict.

I still can't make it happen on my system, so I will be interested to know
if these suggestions help you to clean up your system and get Visio running
properly:
Close down all apps
ENSURE you have your Visio install media handy, then Remove Visio (all versions) from the system.
Use regedit to remove the Visio settings completely, by deleting these
entries :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Visio
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Visio
Restart the machine
Without launching other apps, install Visio 2007, apply SP1 and any critical updates, etc.
Test Visio with a new blank drawing (don't use any saved drawings)

Let me know how that works.

FYI - If you use a lot of Controls in your Visio drawings, either added
yourself, or via the solutions that you use, there is potential for this to
occur again, unfortunately. The team is doing some great work on x64
improvements for the next version, but for Visio 2007 this conflict does
not have a fix.

Hi Barb,

Thanks for responding to my query. In a way, I'm glad to hear that I'm not
the only one who is encountering this issue. Strangely enough, I don't have
any ActiveX controls in a drawing (unless I happened to open one at some
point).

Regardless, I cleaned the registry, attempted reinstallation (we have a
multiple seat license on our network share), and updated Visio with SP1 and
all updates. After opening a new drawing, the problem still exists.

As I have the entire Office system installed (as well as the Primary Interop
Assemblies, etc), it may go deeper than Visio alone. However,
uninstalling/reinstalling everything is a project in itself. :)

Also, I'm glad to hear that the O14 team is working on x64. (I used to work
at MS in Building 50, so I know all about skipping 13). ;)

Thanks,
Jason Silver

Jason -
I'm sorry the cleanup/reinstall didn't help the problem. The other
suggestion I've been given is to try a new user profile. If the new
profile works, then we might be able to isolate the source of the
difference. (And you can log in on the alternate profile as a work
around). Another thought I had was to test running in Developer Mode. Or
turning *off* Developer Mode if you are running that way now. With a
reinstall, I'm guessing that you were running in normal mode, so try this:

If a new profile or changing Developer mode doesn't work, then you are
correct that the next phase would be to blast off Office 2007 and reinstall
- and I can't guarantee that would fix it either, I'm afraid.
