I am trying to add a Table of Conetnts to a document. I marked all headings
just like microsoft says. I tried to insert the TOC like microsoft says.

BUT IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!

I get the subject error.

The easiest and safest way of creating a TOC is to use styles for your
headings and build the TOC from those styles. See

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html

Reading between the lines of your post, I'm guessing you have marked your
headings with TC fields, but have the TOC set up to build the contents from
styles/levels rather than from the "table entry fields". In that case, you
need to change the settings for the TOC field. (You don't say what version
of Word, but look for an Options button in the dialog.)

Did you use Ctrl+F9 to enter the field parentheses?
