Error on launch of Microsoft office applications

I've recently formatted my harddrive and installed windows xp. Every thing
seems to work fine but after I installed office 2000 small business I can't
get any of the applications (Word, Xcel, Wordpad, paint, etc.) to run. When
they launch after a moment an error message appears stating that Word, Excel,
etc has encountered a problem and has to close. It then asks if you want to
send the error report. I've installed all the latest updates and patches
with no luck. I tried the fix associated with the normal.dot template but
the search didn't find any files to rename. I'm running an Anthlon 64 bit
processor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Outlook express and
Internet Explorer seem to be working fine.

Are other apps ok?
Anything shown in Event Logs?
When sys is running in safe mode they start?
After installing winxp, you installed drivers? eg chipset and other hw
drivers?

Other apps seem to be running fine. It;s just the office apps. Word, Excel etc.
