error opening documents

Hi
I am running office 2000 sp2. I have 2 users who cannot open word (and
excel) documents by double clicking them. They get a path not found error. If
Word is open (or excel for spreadsheets) they can open the documents by
double clicking (this is not a file association problem).
Any ideas?
