Error Opening File in Word 2003

Several users in my company cannot open certain Word docs using Word 2003.
Any time our customer in Mexico emails with a Word doc as an attachment,
when we try to open it, it will open for a second and then close.

After, if you go into Word, you get the auto recovery feature..."Word has
recovered the following files..." But if you try to open it from there, the
same thing happens.

I have updated their version of office via the microsoft website. This is
happening for several users.

However, if they forward it to me (also using Word 2003), I can open the
document just fine.

Any ideas?
