Trying to install update SP3 for windows xp professional. Inserted my CD
when prompted and it tells me it's not the right CD. Another try and it told
me I needed to install xp professional. A message also noted I should search
for proret.msi file?

There is no such thing as Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. The latest
Windows XP service pack is Service Pack 2, and it works for both Windows
XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. By the way, this newsgroup
is for questions about Microsoft Office, and your question is off-topic
here.

I have the same problem and it is SP3, but it is on Office XP upgrade, not
Win XP. THe installation process asks to load the MS publisher 2002 CD, then
errors when it cannot find the file "PRORET.MSI". THe SP3 installation then
ends unfinished. I have searched on the Publisher 2002 CD and there is no
"PRORET.MSI" file anywhere....

Hi, mark,

I believe that proret.msi is found on the Office XP Professional CD. Have
you inserted that CD?

I have had the same problem. It is for installing XP Office Pro SP3. I
even downloaded the version that did not require the original CD (54MB). Yet
it still prompted me for 'proret.msi', which I have not got. After
cancelling, I could not use Excel and was prompted for the mysterious
'proret.msi' again. I looked at this website and Dell (my make of PC). I
see I am not the only one with the problem, but I do not see any solutions..
As a last effort before going mental at some poor tech support person, I
reinstalled XL and it solved the problem....maybe thats the only way.
