Error report when amending templates & template/document inconsist

I am trying to amend some templates, but everytime I go to do so this error
message comes up:

'Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience.

The information you were working on might be lost. Microsoft Word can try to
recover it for you.

 Recover my work and restart Microsoft Word

Please tell Microsoft about this problem....

....Send Error Report / Don't Send'

I can use Word in all other aspects without this message appearing, it's
simply when I go to amend a template that I get this error.

Also, there is one template in particular which has already been amended,
but when I go to 'New: General Template' and go to open a new document using
that template, the document differs from the template; it is the previous
template, not the altered one.

Is this an easy fix?

What version of Word are you using? Do the templates contain any macros?
What type of content do the templates contain? Text only? Form fields?
Tables?
