I guess it wouldn't hurt us to remember that if people could do the job in
TeX (free!!) they probably would not have spent $400.00 on Word
On the other hand, if you want to do the jobs Word is designed for, sorry:
TeX just doesn't have the functionality.
That user's problem is almost undoubtedly corrupted internal nested lists,
caused by mis-handling bullets and/or numbering.
If so, if he copies his text to a new blank document, the crashes will stop.
If he fixes his numbered lists, the crashes will stop. Not a big deal.

This is exactly the reason I started using TeX, more than Word. I
never loose documents by using TeX. For Windows, which you are using,
I suppose, because you mentioned Office 2007, visit here
http://www.tug.org/
and look for distributions for Windows. MikTeX seems good for Windows.
