error running "Check for Updates" in MS Word

I'm having a problem with Word 2004 for Mac. When I select "Check for
Updates" in the Help menu, I am receiving the following error message:

"An error occurred while trying to launch Microsoft AutoUpdate.
[PLACEHOLDER]"

I have updated my Office suite to Version 11.3.4. I have a MacBook
running Mac OSX Version 10.4.9, fully updated. Any help/advice would
be appreciated. Thanks!
