Error signatures and lost data

Hello,

I have MS word 2000/ with Windows XP. Recently, I have lost several
word documents and rec'd the standard sorry for the inconvenience
message.... When I re-booted the word files were there but microsoft
was "unable to recover" the files. The files were completley BLANK-
even though I have autosave set for every 2 minutes. Today, I had the
unfortunate, and somewhat horrifying, experience of watching my
computer eat an entire dissertation chapter letter by letter via
backspace. No- the backspace key was not stuck and my keyboard, in
general, is very clean. I wrote down the magic code MS gave for this
screw up with the hopes that someone somewhere can help me figure out
what is happening!!!

It said--- error signatures szApp Name: Winword.exe szAppVer:
9.0.0.6926 sz Modname : hungapp szModVer: 0.0.0.0. offset.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
L. Kelley

Did you check for viruses on your computer?
Today, I had the

Mark may well be right with the cause but what happens if you go back to the
last *real* save, i.e. not auto-save. If that has disappeared, something is
screwing up big time and getting your anti-virus definitions up to date and
doing a complete system scan is a good place to start. If you're relying on
auto-save that's not a practice I would recommend and for important things
like dissertations I would back-up frequently to removable media, e.g.
floppy if it will fit or CD ROM.
