Hi,

I've installed office 2003 pro as downloaded from msdn. I've tried
upgrading both to sp2 via office autoupdate and from the msdn dvd and
both yield the error "the expected version of the product was not found
on your system".

What's the next step?

I was going to post exactly the same thing. I am using Enterrpise Edition. I
have installed SP1 without a problem and last night I tried to apply SP2 for
both Office 2003 and Office 2003 Proofing Tools.

I got exactly the same message for Office 2003 but SP2 for Proofing Tools
installed just fine. Here's a pic of the Control Panel:

I then came accross this article in Knowledge base:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909074

Now this article is one of the worst articles I've even read. The cause is
that Microsoft Office 2003 Web Components version 2 or Microsoft Office 2003
Web Components version 3 is installed on the computer. As everyone can see
from the CP, it is not installed in mine and never was.

Resolution. Install version 3. Hello? Why should I install version 3 is it
causes a problem. Tried everything, even installing owc11.msi. Still the same.

If anyone has find a workaround, I would be happy to hear that. The above
article is simple misleading.

Thanks for your post Nickos.

That KB article solved my problem. I had web components installed and
didn't need them so removed them. The service pack went in fine after
that.

Hope you manage to get your sorted out. In my case the files had been
updated to service pack 2 even though it told me the update failed.
There is probably a good chance that your install worked fine too other
than the message. Did you check the logs as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884290. Hopefully they can shed some
light on things.

Cheers,

Hi Nikos,

I used a patch that required the original cd.

Hope all works out ok. Installing and patching software is such a
nightmare sometimes!

Hello Stuart

The second article was helpful for me. The full exe (100+ MB) installed just
fine. However, I cannot understand why there are two articles for the same
problem. I found the later by mistake actually.
