Error "The file X.doc is not available"

HELP! I am on XP Home with SP1, and MS Office 2000. I was ok, then I did the Office Update.
Now I can open Word, & save a docoument. However I can not open any docouments, old or new.
I get the following message (the X is the name of the saved Word docoument.)

I have downloaded the text converters, just in case it was a older word docoument, but no difference.

Any ideas, short of re-installing Office?

The usual cause of this is a conflict with the Norton Office Plug-in. See
“OFF: Cannot Open Office Documents or Cannot Edit Inserted Objects After You
