Error: "The server "" timed out" being received when opening a web site on my computer

J

Jeremy Grandstaff

Hello to all,

Urgent help is being requested here. I am in the process of redesigning my
current web site, and when I tried to open it through front page using the
"File, open site" command (to make more updates), I am recieving the
following error:

The server "" timed out. The current request did not complete successfully.

I am opening the web site on my computer, so there is no server time out
that could be happening. I can also open sub webs to this web, as long as I
open them directly. This happens even after rebooting my computer.

Can someone please contact me asap to help with this. I do not want to have
to restart the design process, and I obviously have no back up of work done
thus far.

Thanks,
Jeremy Grandstaff

Is it disc based (C:\somepath\) or Server based (http://localhost/)

I hope I am not intruding, but I came here to search for help for the exact
same error I receive when trying to open my website using front page. Mine
is server-based. I have been getting the error for over a week now and I
have had 2 reps from Earthlink, who hosts my site, tell me it is a problem
with front page.

Again, I apologize if I am intruding, but I thought we might be able to find
some commonalities that might help both of us.

Any thoughts?

Somehow FP is treating it as server based
- the web folder should not be named w/ a .com
Try deleting all FP temp and FP web cache files
- use the tool from http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm

I tried doing what you suggestte, but it is still not working. Any other
ideas?

J

Jeremy Grandstaff

OK, here is what I did to fix it.

To the best of my investigation, the problem is that at some point, your
computer stopped working while you were working on a web site. There is
corruption in the _vti_pvt
folder. Here is what I did.

I created a new directory, and copied all of the information from the old
directory.
Then, I deleted the _vti_pvt folder. When I opened the new folder in front
page, it asked if I wanted to ad the frontpage information to the folder; I
answered yes.
You will notice that you can access the folder through front page, but that
the navigation and other front page specifics are missing. I copied the file
"structure" found in the _vti_pvt folder from the old folder to the new one,
while front page was closed, and was able to recover my navigation. I just
rebuilt the rest as needed.

I know I"m not a MVP, but it worked for me.
