ERROR: "This identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage"

I purchased a new MacBook Pro 10.4.8 a few months ago and got the
Office 2004 Test software but am pretty sure I have never used it. In
the meantime, I have been running my old Office X. Recently I forced
quit my Entourage Office X during an operation and it corrupted my
database 26.9MB. I couldn't rebuild my database at first but
eventually succeeded my creating a new user to do an advanced rebuild
- now 2.3MB. Now the new database won't run and an error message "This
identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage" comes up. Do
I need to purchase the Office 2004 Entourage software and putting the
new database in there? Or is there a new solution to recovering my old
emails? Thanks so much in advance for any advice!!

You need to upgrade Entourage to the exact same version you were
running before so the version of the database matches the version of
Entourage.

running before so the version of the database matches the version of
Entourage.

How do I do that? The version I am running in 10.0.0 dating back to
2001. I don't have disks for it anymore. Can I find an upgrade from
the internet? If so, which one do I download? And then do I just put
the old microsoft user data into the new MUD?

How sure are you that you didn't, at some point, open Entourage 2004
and accidentally convert your database to 2004 format? If you did
that, I'm afraid the only way to get to your email is to purchased
Office 2004.

(Note: You should really be running 2004 anyway because Office X is
very old, not supported anymore, and lots of bugs have been fixed since
then!)

updater from <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx>.

When you used the Test drive for Office 2004, it created a new Identity
folder in your Microsoft User Data folder inside your Documents folder.

During the test drive period you were forced by Entourage to leave mail on
server so you could download into Entourage X should you choose to not
upgrade.

Normally, if you try to open an Entourage 2004 Identity with a version of
Office that is older than the one where the data was created, you will get
the error "This identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage"
because of a change in the database after the initial CD release. This error
has never applied to Entourage X mail. This makes me suspicious of what
version of Office you are running and what database you did the rebuild on.
Look under Entourage in the menu bar and see "About Entourage".

To upgrade your Office X install, just go to Mactopia and download the free
updaters. The last updater for Office X takes you to 10.1.9. (this update
includes all of the improvements released in all previous Office v. X
updates.)

To get your Entourage 2004 data back into Entourage X, you will need to be
able to open Entourage 2004 and export your mail as MBOX files. To do this,
just drag each folder and subfolder to the desktop. (You can create a custom
view and get all mail in one big folder.) Drag the MBOX files into your
folder list in Entourage X.

I highly suggest you upgrade to Office 2008 when it is released.

Use "Remove Office" to remove the test drive for Office 2004. You might need
to run it a couple of times to be successful. The removal of the test drive
has been a nightmare for many users.
