Error trying to authenticate to an Exchange server

All,

I have outlook 2003 installed on my Windows XP sp1 workstation. I have created a mail profile and specified my exchange server. Whenever I try to open Outlook and enter my credentials I recieve an error message stating that my credentials are incorrect. My notebook is a part of a workgroup, if I join my workstation to the domain I am able to connect to the exchange servers and retrieve my email.
Any help would be appreciated.
