error trying to open file

We use Word 2002 on our home pc (Office XP--Small Business edition). Whenever
we try to send word documents via email, no one can open the documents. Or,
if my husband copies a document to a disk, then tries to open it at work, he
can't open it.
This is the error msg that comes up:
"Word experienced an error trying to open the file.
Try these suggestions:
• Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
• Make sure there is sufficient memory and disk space.
• Open the file the Text Recovery converter."
Thanks to anyone who can help.

We're not using Norton. I've tried replacing my normal.dot, zapping the
registry, updating the service pack, etc.

Tried that also, to no avail. Do I need to uninstall Word and reinstall it?

One thing I can guarantee: uninstalling and reinstalling will not help.
