Error! Unable to check for updates on this computer

A

Amanda

Environment = Windows XP and Office XP

Receive the error message "Error! Unable to check for
updates on this computer" when trying to update with
officeupdate.

The suggested reasons for the problem are not helpful:
1. You do not have administrative privileges for this
computer
- Logged on with full administrative privileges
2. There is a network problem and the detection catalog
used by the Office Update site failed to download. Go
back to the Downloads home page and try running detection
again
- Can use it without error on another PC
3. Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from
previously applied Office updates are missing from the
\Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP
files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced
for future update operations. If the files are missing
you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result
of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product
Support for assistance
- Microsoft Product Support will not help as it claims my
PID has already used the maximum number of support
incidents available (one allowed request - very generous)
4. You installed Office updates in the past and then
upgraded from Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows
Installer version 1.1. For more information see the KB
article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source
if Unavailable
- From what I can gather Windows XP shipped with version
2.0.2600.0. I have not gone backwards in versions.

If anyone from Microsoft can help I would appreciate it.
I have spent a lot of time going through the posted
problems in this area and so far the only fix I have
found relates to modifying the Registry but the fix did
not come from a Microsoft specialist therefore I am
hesitant to use it.

Cheers
Amanda

I have the same exact problem! Running 98SE with Office
2000 Premium. Office update scan stops at 57% with the
same error msg. I have found no solution.

Amanda, check http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?

I had the same problem, and this fixed it. You can also
call MS support. Tell them the problem is with Update,
not the basic Office software, and they will help.
Reference the KB article.

Good luck, John
