ERROR UPON OPENING A DOCUMENT

Every time I open an existing document I get an error
message as follows:
"C:\...\****.doc is being used by ralph. Do you want to
make a copy?"

My platform is Win2000. Why does my computer think that
the document is opened when it is not? How can I stop
this message from popping up?
