error when importing a merge list

I can import a list from Notepad, arrange and sort them but when I hit view
labels I get an error message. Can anyone help I hate to pay $49.00 for a
simple question.

Can you spell out the exact sequence of what you are doing?
- which version of Word?
- what do you mean by "importing" here? Are you saving a Notepad list, then
opening it in Word? Or are you using it as the data source for a merge?

At what point in the sequence does the error message display, and what does
it say?
