Error when opening a downloaded document in WordPad- Windows 98

Sarah Jane

I'm using Windows 98. Whenever I try to open or view a
document from another person I get "This program has
performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." It
does not happen when I open a document that I've created
myself. The deatils of the error message say

WORDPAD caused an invalid page fault in
module MSWRD832.CNV at 017f:0140f6d5.

When I click close I get the error message again. Clicking
close again finally shuts down the entire program. Could
it be that the files I'm trying to open are sent from
people using later Windows programs such as 2000 or XP?
Any suggests, apart from telling me to upgrade this is,
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
