error when opening multiple Word documents

N

Narelle Robson

in the Open dialogue box, i select multiple document
files. i then right click and select Open to open all
the documents at once. an error message then appears
informing me that this function is not available from the
menu. my only option at this point is to close out of
the Open dialogue box (no documents having been opened).
when i try to do anything else in Word i am then informed
that a dialogue box is open and must be closed before i
can continue. as far as i can see, no dialogue boxes are
open and the only way i can go any further is to Ctrl,
Alt, Delete out of Word.

any suggestions

Some of the commands found on the shortcut menu do not function
correctly in the File/Open or File/Save As dialog box. Open is one of
them. This command is more for opening files outside the application,
such as from the Desktop. Also, the commands found on the shortcut
menu are OS commands rather than built-in Word commands.

The reason you are encountering the message is that your OS is
attempting to open the file in Word (rather than Word opening the
file) and a dialog box *is* indeed open. I find once I close the Open
dialog box then the documents open.

Once you group your files click the "Open" command button in the Open
dialog box instead.

Additionally, what version of Word are you using? I encounter the
message but Word does not hang.
