Error when opening Word File from Network but no error when opening locally

Humphrey Laubscher

I have 4 documents. Say DocA,DocB,DocC,DocD. DocA/B are
the originals and DocC/D are files which have had a lot
of Data from A/B copied to it. The problem arrises when I
open C/D it can lock A/B in read only mode. This only
happens when opening the files that are on the network
via Windows Explorer. This does not happen through the
File Open within Word. This happens on both W2K and WXP
running either Word97 or Word2000. I have tried placing
the files on different servers but no luck.
Also what I noticed in the file properties is that they
all list the DOT file as the original template file.
Please help.

Thanks,
Humphrey

If you are opening the files outside the application (other than using
File/Open) then it sounds like the file association needs to be
recreated.

Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.
