Error when reopening word document

Before the saving of a 150 page document was complete, I clicked on the "X"
to close the window. Now, when I try to reopen the document, it partially
opens and the program says there was an error and that the document needs to
be recovered. However, the recovery step does not work. The document
partially reopens, another error message, and recovery that does not work...
The document was saved successfully into wordpad, but all the graphics are
gone. Printing the partially opened document to pdf retrieved 120 pages and
only some of the graphics. Emailed the document to another computer and same
problem on reopening.
Any ideas how to recover the original full document with graphics (Word
2002, Windows XP)?

MV, when working with corrupted documents, I have had success by
inserting the corrupt document into a new document container. Start a
new document, go to file > insert and choose FILE.
