Error when saving shared document in Shared Workspace

We are using shared workspaces and Sharepoint Portal in our company. I have
users that are editing a shared document in a document library. If more than
one user has the same document open at the same time, and one user does NOT
close the document after editing and saving, then the other cannot save the
document until the first user closes the document. How do we avoid this
problem? Or, is this a purposeful design of Word?

SharePoint is an area I still need to get up to speed on but are the
users checking the documents in and out?

Also, you may want to try posting this question in one of the
SharePoint newsgroups since that's where the SharePoint gurus tend to
hang out.
