Error when trying to copy database

Kurt

A user called seeking help regarding some problems with
his Access database. I don't have many details and he
hasn't written down the error messages, but I'd figured I
throw this out to see if anyone has any ideas.

First of all, the database worked fine when it had 7500
records. When he added 1500 records, he could no longer
sort and filter the table (came up with an error
message).

He said the database is about 1 GB (which seems absurd
for only 9000 records). I suggested he first make a copy
of the database (a backup) and then try compacting it to
see if that resolves the problem. (My other theory is
that it's corrupted.)

However, when he tried to make a copy of the database it
took about an hour at which point an error message
appeared indicating that the file was in use (when in
fact no one had it opened).

I'm reluctant to just compact the database without having
a backup (in case something goes wrong), but seeing how
can't seem to make a backup, I'm not sure how best to
proceed.

Any ideas?

Try creating a new blank database and importing all the
tables/Queries.... from the old one

I was hoping to use this option as a last resort, on the
assumption that problem is something other than
corruption. But, seeing how they can't even make a
backup, this may be the lesser of all evils. Thanks.

This is one of the standard things to try when you have a corrupt MDB.
But I'd also suggest making a copy of the MDB file before doing
anything else.

Finally, see the Access Corruptions FAQ at my website if you are still
having troubles for a few more things to try.
