Error when trying to open docs in Word 2007

D

Dr. Zoltar

When I first start Word 2007 I get an error message stating:

"Word cannot open this document template.

(C:\Program Files\...\A20MSW11.DOT)"

Then if I try to open any doc file that was created with Office 2003 or
Office 2007 B2TR I get the error message:

"The file {file name} is not available."

Is Office 2007 B2TR reliant on having Office 2003 installed on the same
system?

B***** Norton *again*. No-one answered my request for comments before, but
is there no way they can be held responsible for the chaos and waste of time
(much of it professional) that they apparently cause?

Not in this case; this one belongs to Microsoft. It will be fixed in
the final release of 2007.

The way to hold Symantec, or any other company, responsible for their
engineering lapses is to avoid buying their products until the
problems are fixed. Lots of people feel the same way about Microsoft,
Oracle, SAP, Computer Associates, HP, and most other "big name"
vendors.

Also realize that part of the problem is perception: We're talking
about products that are used by millions of people, so when even a
tiny percentage of those customers have problems there are thousands
of them and their complaints show up here. There are plenty of
products that have much worse problems, but their installed base is
only a few thousand, and we never hear about them.

Thanks again Jay. Makes sense. It's just that the answer to a whole *raft*
of problems is invariably 'disable the Norton add-in'. BTW, thanks to your
help I have established procedure for reinstalling and reupdating Word 2000
if I ever need to reformat and reload again.

Thank you for your reply. I will definately try the link and give those
steps a try.

I suppose the most frustraiting thing is that the error message gives no
indication as to what the root cause of the problem would be. So I'd have a
hard time tracking down the fix or work around on my own.

Im running Microsoft Live OneCare and get the same error message, any
fixes.

Did you ever have Norton Antivirus on that machine? Sometimes it leaves
behind a dll, which has to be unregistered. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 for instructions.

The file A20MSW11.dot is an Avery Wizard label template that Word 2007
doesn't seem to use anyway. You can go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office12\STARTUP and delete it.
