Error while saving project!

Syed Ammar

Hi,

When I try to save my project, I get the following message:

"Project cannot save this project until all required fields have valid
values.
You must specify values for all required project and task fields
before
saving the project... Insert the fields as columns in the task *** and
edit
the values or specify these fields in the project or task information
dialog
box."

The issue is it allows me to add remove tasks, but as soon as i try to
update the progress of any task, this error occurs. Surprisingly if
the administrator works on the same project he doesn't encounter any
error. It is only displayed for project managers.

Can anyone help (probably based on their own experience)?

Thanks

Syed,

Is this in 2007? If so, it sounds like you might be encountering a cache
issue. There are issues with caching of custom fields in 2007, especially
pre SP1. If an administrator makes changes to the global then some custom
field value references can get jumbled up until you clear you cache. To
clear your cache.

Close and check in all projects and exit Project Professional
Start > Run
Type in %appdata% and click OK
Navigate to \Microsoft\MS Project folder
Delete the 12 and the Cache folders

All client users must do this on their machines. SP1 is supposed to fix
this issue.

Let me know if this helps resolve your problem.

You probably have mandatory enterprise fields either on Project level
og tasklevel.
You are not able to save your project until all mandatory fields have
been filled in.
You can check the mandatory proejct fields by clicking Project,
Project information (not quite sure about the English notification)
and in the dialog box that shows up, you might have fields with an
asterix. * These fields must be filled in.

If you have mandatory fields on a task level, they are a little harder
to find. You should ask your administrator about these fields.. When
he/she tells you, yo should insert that column into a veiw an fill in
the blanks

Dear Jonathan,

Thanks alot for the advice. Yes i am using 2007.

The problem that i have diagnosed so far is that i have created a
custom field 'Project Category' and made it mandatory (with a look up
table). I had initially saved my project with a sepcified value in
this field. Now when i try to edit progress on my project this value
is overwritten with a blank value and subsequently when i try to re-
enter it Proj Professional doesn't change it. Even the options
available in the look-up table get all scrambled-up.

For now though i have resolved the issue by making the field not
mandatory, and Proj Professional is not overwriting the old value. But
i do believe that this issue was being caused by what you just said.
I'll try to look into it.

Again many thanks for the input.

Regards,
Ammar

Syed:

Sounds like you're experiencing local cache corruption. This happens
constantly to administrators who manipulate custom fields. To completely
clear this, do the following:

Start > Run
Type in: %appdata%
Navigate to the MS Project folder
Delete everything under the foder - don't worry the system will recreate the
cache files
