error while using equation editor

I have written a document with some formulas using the equation editor. When
I send this document to a friend he cannot read these formulas. Word does
only display the word Error.
The equation editor is installed in the Word version of my friend and he is
able to make formulas in his documents.

We are both using Word 2003.
Does anybody know what seems to be the problem?

Ask your friend to try repairing the Word installation and/or reinstalling
the equation editor.
