errors and crashes with word

L

Leslie Watson

Hi,

I'm new to this so I'll try to outline the problem as best as I can:

1) I have an iMacG3 running 9.2.2.

2) I use Word98.

3) Somehow my file settings got all screwed up and I collect bogus cache
files and lots of crashes.

4) The files are as follows:

Word Font menu Cache
The document "Word Font Menu Cache (8)" could not be
opened because the application program that created it could not be found.

Word Font Substitutes
Word can only convert 5.0 and 5.1 settings files

Word Settings (8)
Word can only convert 5.0 and 5.1 settings files

I delete them, but every time I use Word I collect new files and
the problem starts all over again. I hope this is enough information. Any
help with this would be wonderful.

Thank you,

Leslie Watson

Hi Leslie,

I¹m not familiar with these error messages but I wonder what the source is
of the documents you work with most often. Were they created using Word 5.x
or did you create them in Word 98 (or something else)? Get back to me on
that and then I¹ll do some speculating on what the source of the problem
might be.

Hi Leslie,

You didn¹t answer my question about what version of Word created the
documents. I take it they were created by you in Word 98?

There¹s only one setting I can think of that you might have hit by mistake.
I don¹t remember exactly what it¹s called in Word 98 but it¹s on the View
menu and should be called Word 5.1 Menus. If you have it checked, uncheck
it. The thing is, though, that I¹m not sure this option would account for
what you¹re seeing but let us know if this helps.

Also, in Preferences> Save (terminology may be slightly different in Word
98), do you have the option to Allow Fast Saves checked? If so, uncheck it
and leave it unchecked! It is known to bloat documents and corrupt them.
I¹m not sure that this has anything to do with your problem either though.

Oh. Microsoft Word 97-98 selected. Do you?

Question: When you get the error messages that you quoted in your first
post, what triggers them? Is it trying to open one of these documents or
something else?

Beth,

I have Word98 installed, but I think somewhere along the way I must have
mistakenly hit a wrong setting and changed everything. Is it possible to
send you the basic set-up as an attachment so you would have firsthand
access to the problem? Also, is it possible to fix the documents I've
already written? Should I be using something else other than Word98?

Thanks for you help,

Sorry. That fourth paragraph should read:

Oh. One other thing. In Preferences> Compatibility, next to ³Recommended
options for:², you should have Microsoft Word 97-98 selected. Do you?

Beth
