Start by running an updated anti-spyware and anti-virus scan. I suspect the
slow-down is caused by spyware.
The defragmenter will always open, no matter how bad the computer is. If it
cannot proceed, the defragmenter will tell you why.
It is possible that your hard disk is too full. You must have ten per cent
free-space in order to run defragmenter.
I think your computer may have been hit by a piece of malware that is using
your computer to distribute pirated music or software. If so, your disk
will have filled up and that will cause the computer to slow down
dramatically.

My computer wont allow me to defragment it. When I go the route to go into
the defragmentor it wont even open. my computer has been running real slow
and I want to try to speed it up. Any help will be greatful. This is the
first time I have been to this help site.I am using Windows XP Professional.
