Errors opening Word / Excell documents

After installing Office the system works fine initially.
But if I install all the patches from MS web site, I get
errors opening word document and excel documents. Only
way to stop the errors is to uninstall and reinstall ms-
office but then system remains unpatched.

I keep getting "The XXxx.XXX file not found or available".

Then on close i have to save the normal.dot every time.

Things I've tried...
Tried renaming the normal.dot
Tried opening the support.dot
Tried renaming / deleting the registry keys as stated in
one kb article.

I can open word using the /a switch but can't open the
support.dot template. And with word open with the /a
switch i still get prompted with save the normal.dot
file. With word in safe mode, the save tab in the option
is not checked to save normal.dot file.

I get similar errors opening any excel file as well. PPT
seams to not be in trouble.

Don't know about xl but;

"If using Norton AV then go to Norton Options and in the Miscellaneous
section turn off: "Enable Office Plug-in"."
