Errors publishing calendar to WebDAV server

According to Outlook Help you can use a UNC path. Elsewhere, including here
and slipstick.com, we are instructed to use a URL. Both scenarios fail.

UNC path = \\servername\sharename\folder\
URL = file://servername/sharename/folder
Error = "The address you typed is not valid. Check the address, and then try
again."

URL = http://servername/sitename/ virtual_folder_name
Error = "The upload of 'Calendar' failed. The calendar was not published to
the server. This might be because the calendar name is not valid. Rename your
calendar in Outlook, and then publish again."

Configuration:
LAN with Windows Server 2003 running IIS 6.0
Publishing from a XP workstation with Office 2007 Pro Plus
TCP port 80 with a unique header value
No SSL or other security
Default Web Site is in its default location (C:\Inetpub), and is used by
Symantec Endpoint Protection (req'd by that app.).
User Web sites are on another drive.
Exchange is not installed.

Verified:
1. NTFS Security tab: all folders have read, write, and execute priv's for
domain users, default priv's for IIS_WPG account.
2. NTFS Web Sharing tab: appropriate folders shared with aliases (note:
under the Web Sharing tab the "share in" dropdown always shows "Default Web
Site". I choose the correct site from the dropdown, but when I return to it
"Default Web Site" is once again listed. I don't know whether it is accepting
the setting and this is just the default, and I don't know how to verify that
it is correct.)
3. DNS contains "Host (A)" records for the sites on the default port and IIS
has both port 80 sites running
4. IIS site, alias, and folder properties all show appropriate priv's.
5. Web site works
6. WebDAV is installed and listed as "allowed" in the IIS web service
extensions, and it's required file is present and "allowed."
7. IIS has been restarted.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
(a previous post didn't seem to go through, so hopefully this is not a
dulicate)
