Errors when downloading email

I use MailWasher Pro to filter spam. When I download the legitimate emails to
Outlook 2003 I often (but not always) get an error about the SMTP settings (I
can't give the exact error because of course, right now, it's working fine).
Sometimes I have to click Send/Receive 3 or 4 times before it will actually
download the mail. The same is sometimes true when I'm sending an email.

Any comments?

What happens when you do NOT use Mailwasher as a proxy between your
e-mail client and your mail server?

What happens when you disable the e-mail scanning feature in your
anti-virus program?

Same thing happens, but as I said, intermittently. I use Avast antivirus. I
haven't tried disabling it.
