errors with cross references and captions

Hi, I keep encountering an error with cross references and captions. This
always seems to occur in a normal paragraph of text which contains a cross
reference to a table number. When the document saves, the paragraph splits
at the cross reference, with the cross reference becoming a new paragraph and
the rest of the text becoming a caption. Have I set up the cross reference
properly? I'd be grateful if anyone has any suggestions!
Thanks
Stephen

Each cross-reference depends on a hidden bookmark, inserted by Word as
you created the cross-reference.

The problem is that bookmarks can extend to include excess text;
typically, this happens when you try to add text before a bookmarked
paragraph by pressing Enter at the beginning of the paragraph. (For
manual bookmarks, inserted via Insert | Bookmark, you can easily
verify this behavior if you first enable the display of bookmarks, on
the View tab of Tools | Options.)

To avoid the issue in the future, don't press Enter at the beginning
of a bookmarked paragraph; add a new paragraph by pressing Enter at
the end of the previous paragraph instead.

To fix the problem: Select the part of the caption that should be in
the cross-reference. Then, on the Insert menu, click Bookmark. Click
"Hidden bookmarks." Click "Location." Now, the name of the hidden
bookmark should be highlighted in the "Bookmark name" box. Click Add
to redefine the bookmark. Update the cross-reference with F9.
