ESC key from Organizer opens Start menu!?

On one PC here, hitting ESC while in Word's Organizer dialog opens
the Windows Start menu.

The CTRL key is not stuck (I'm aware that CTRL+ESC opens the Start
menu). Hitting ESC does the usual in all other dialogs (that is,
dismisses without saving). And switching keyboards has no effect.

What manner of gremlin is this??

Word 2000, Win XP Pro.
