Estimate resources using generic resource's max units

Sharon

Is it possible to estimate resources by setting up generic resources by work
type (e.g. Quality Assurance, Business Analyst, Developer, etc), assigning
the generic resource to the tasks in the plan and then tweaking the resource
max units (on the resource not the task) to arrive at a desired end date?

If not, what is the best way to do resource estimation with generic
resources? I'm trying to present several different staffing models.

Thanks,

Sharon

No. Max units is not a strict limit on a resource. It is just the point
where Project considers a resource to be overallocated. You can over
allocate a resource any time you like.

The one area where max units does come into play is when doing resource
leveling. In that case, project will shift activities to try and prevent
resource overallocation, but it will not change the duration or rate of
assignment so it does not allow that sort of fine tuning of resource max
units that you are speaking of.

If you want to increase work per day for a resource in such a way that it
affects all tasks to which the resource is ssigned, increase the working
time per day in the resoruce's calendar.
