Event Id 6980 when creating PWA project web site

Installation completed fine without errors. However, I am getting an error
trying to setup the intial web site (PWA) in sharepoint. It fails and in the
event log I have the message

Time: 5:33:12 PM

Computer: HECTOR
Description:
Provisioning 'pwa': To create databases we need dbcreator and securityadmin
server roles on servers 'TRISTAN' and 'TRISTAN'.

p.s. the SQL 2005 database is on another server not local

Hi I had the same problem and did everything under the sun to fix it. I called Microsoft and was told rather than following the instructions just start the Project 2007 setup process which will install SharePoint's necessary components.
Here are the steps to fix your issue

1) Uninstall Project 2007
2) Uninstall SharePoint
3) Reboot
4) Start Project 2007 installation
5) Run Configuration Wizard
