event onexit - event beforeupdate

Can anyone explain to me which event comes first.

I want to check if the field is null - display a message
and stay in the same field.
I tried the beforeupdate event - it didn't when I press
enter on the field and leave it empty I did not received
the message and the cursor move to next field - only when
I ,ade the check in the onexit event I received the message

why..
