Ever since I got my last Windows Update, I can't do a "save as"

from an attachment in an Outlook email message. I uninstalled the 4 updates
and it worked fine but last night, I got an auto update and I can't "save as"
anymore! Even after opening the attachment in Word, I can't "save as."

I am having the same problem with multiple computers in my network... I
didn't approve any office updates, just XP and Security Updates

For some reason it appears the Windows XP update to correct a potential
problem with Internet Explorer has created a conflict with Office programs.
I was having the same problem with both Word and Excel.

I also downloaded the Office update and it did nothing.

What I eventually did, was go back and Restore the System to before the
download occured....(I also found this tip on the same newsgroup, so I take
no credit).

It is pretty easy actually,

Click on Start
Click on Help and Support
Click on Performance and Maintenance
Click on Using System Restore to undo changes
Click on Run the System Restore Wizard.

Run the wizard and pick a date prior to Tuesday (that was when Microsoft
sent out the download).

After you have done the restore, you should again be able to access files in
your Office programs.

Let me know how it works out.

Well, both of my computers are affected by this "Update." They have different
versions of Office, too - and 1 is XP professional and the other is XP Home.
The first time this happened to me was on Tuesday when I did the update the
first time. I then unistalled the 4 updates and everything was fine. Last
night, the auto-updater got me on both computers and here I am again. I
can't open files or do a save-as. I tried the Office update but it failed to
download after 3 attempts. If I do what you suggest here, will that be a
permanent fix?

have tried to do a system restore and it didn't work, now ALL i want to do
is uninstall the updates which have caused this problem - please can someone
tell me how to do this. I have turned off Automatic updates and never want to
turn it on again!

I also hope that someone from microsoft is working on solving this problem
as it means that I can't save any new documents - effectivly stopping me from
working, very frustrating indeed

I experienced the same problem on two computers. One allowed me to do a
system restore, but the other one wouldn't restore (I don't know why). I
went to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, checked Show Updates box and then
uninstalled the KB908531 update and everything seems to be working now.
Don't ask me why I chose that one other than prior posts pointed to a
security update, not office updates. I ignored the message on the uninstall
that other updates might be affected. It was late last night and I think I
was willing to remove the security updates one by one, but got lucky on the
first one.

I came back to the forum today hoping someone would show MS has a fix. I
now have a downloading update to be installed, but I am not doing it. Any
way to delete it?

Well, I had a two hour phone call with Microsoft and had to delete the update
#KB908531, so you picked the right one. The other three are supposed to be
ok and not effecting Office. I had already done the Restore on one of my
computers. Also, you have to change your Auto Update to Manual (3rd option)
so if it wants to download that 531 update again, you can tell it NO!
My desktop was real slow to come back after the restore but seems ok now.
My laptop seems ok, too. I will keep my fingers crossed!

And after 2 hours, Microsoft said what?
