Every new WORD doc opens with text stuck in it

I am running Word 2000 on Win XP Home (w/SP 2). Every time I open a
new Word doc (even a new Outlook e-mail), it contains text from an old
file. It is like it is embedded in the mind of my Word program. How
do I get rid of this??? Please help.

All new docs are based on a template called normal.dot (dot, not doc - this
is not a typo). In Word, hit F1 to start up the help system, search for
normal.doc, and read about how to modify it. It seems someone has modified
your template by leaving some text in it.

Oops: In the help system, search for NORMAL.DOT. That *was* a typo! :)
