Every time I exit Word, Word wants to replace the existing Normal.

When I work on my Word document, I am not aware of making any changes to a
file called "Normal" or have named any of my files "Normal." But in the last
few weeks, I have been getting the following messages every time when I try
to exit the Word application. On my first attempt to exit, the message
window comes up:

"The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?"

Once I select "No," it takes me to a "save as..." window. After I click on
"Cancel" I am still in the Word application.

Then I try to exit Window a 2nd time, at which point this message comes up:

"Changes have been made the affect the global template, Normal. Do you want
to save those changes?"

After I select "No," it usually takes me out of the Word application.

In the last few days, however, sometimes it another message window will come
up with gibberish and "OK" button. I have to click on the "OK" before I can
exit Word.

Any help to solve this would be really appreciated.

I have checked for add-in's & tried all the methods in the file (including
updating and running virus software), but none of them worked.

I don't have Norton AntiVirus, but do have McAfee AntiVirus installed.
Is there any "DLL" file that needs to be removed with McAfee AntiVirus? Any
additional suggestions would help.

Nope, McAfee doesn't have that problem. Are you sure that NAV has NEVER been
installed?

No I can't be sure NAV has never been installed. If it were ever installed,
I can be sure that NAV and officeav.dll are not there anymore.

Are there other file names to check under, other than "norton" or
"officeav"? Would it be more sensible at this point to just remove and
re-install Word?

Reinstalling is very unlikely to help because it does not overwrite
Normal.dot or the Registry or remove any add-ins.

Hi Lily,

I have the same problem. I you have found a solution to this problem plse
forward it to me.
Thank you,

Yes indeed, I also have this problem (in Word XP/2002) and the paper you
reference is very clear. Working step by step through the suggestions given
created clarity. The only add-ins or templates currently loaded into my copy
of Word are from Microsoft itself (various SmartTag dll's and an op.dll --
this is a Toshiba Tablet XP current on updates).

The op.dll is the one causing the behaviour in my case. I will have to
search further for the solution.
