Did you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions & restart after the update?

What "software update" was it?

Sometimes when there is an update, bad things happen. I installed the Safari
4 beta and it totally wiped out all my startup times and caused all sorts of
havoc for me while others have no problems.

When problems happen like this, you will need to download the Apple combo
and run it to overwrite possible corrupt files. (It's ok to install even if
you already have 10.5.6. It will refresh all files.)

Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update
(For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )

If you still have problems, you will need to reinstall Office. Follow these
steps to reinstall:

* Launch the Microsoft Autoupdater (MAU).To launch MAU, you can open any
Office application and select "Check for Updates" under Help in the Menu
bar. Once MAU is launched, select "Keep in Dock"
* Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key down
to disable any startup items.) Be sure all applications are quit before
running updater. IMPORTANT
* Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
* Empty Trash.
* Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk.
* Restart
* Update to 12.1.0 (if you have a newer DVD you might only need the 12.1.5)
* Restart (restarting before you launch any app is important!)
* Update to 12.1.5
* Restart

Note: the AutoUpdater was replaced in the first updater so that should
already be updated. If you used "Remove Office" you would need to download
and install the Microsoft Auto Updater (MAU) for a complete re-install.

The Office 2008 MAU is now hidden away.

Now to discuss an easier way to recover in the future....

We've discussed using SuperDuper!(backup software) before, but this is an
excellent time to remind users about a feature it has that protects you from
system updates that so bad.

One of the options in SuperDuper! is to create what the author calls a
"Sandbox". It's used to revert to pre-update state of your OS. Here's a
description of how this option works:

A Sandbox is a bootable copy of your system, stored on another hard drive or
partition, that shares your personal documents and data with the original.
With SuperDuper!, you actually use the Sandbox as your startup volume. You
can safely install any system updates, drivers or programs in the Sandbox,
without worrying about what might happen to your system. If anything goes
wrong, you can simply start up from the original system. SuperDuper! has
preserved it in its original, pre-disaster state but all your new and
changed personal documents are totally up to date. Within minutes, you're up
and running again without having to go through a difficult and
time-consuming restore process.

SuperDuper! Is $27.95. I¹m not affiliated with the product. Just a satisfied
user. <http://www.shirt-pocket.com/>
