exact column width in format column wont keep my settings has "ch"

2003 has just been pushed to my workstation. I am trying to format a word
document. I need to have the column width set to an exact setting. The new
version has the column width with a "ch"after it. It seems to only have
default settings.
Example: width 23.4 ch
spacing 36 ch

Type the measurement you want, eg 4 in or 75 mm. Word will convert it for you.
