I am running Office 97 SR-1 on a Mac through Virtual PC, but I had the
same problem occasionally when running it on a Pentium 3 PC with Win
98.

I have a spreadsheet that I use to keep track of contacts, with collumns
for name, dates, notes and phone number. THe phone numbers are
the problem, in most I put a full 10 digit number, only to find later that
some have changed to a much shorter number (a 5-digit extention
number, for those of you who work in a big office i.e.: 5-5555) At first
this would happen only occasionally, now almost ALL the cells of that
column are the SAME short number. Anytime I enter a number into
those cells, when I press enter a slightly different short number
appears. I have to switch the cell formatting to TEXT to prevent this,
almost like excel is automatically applying a formular or is
programmed to replace.

Fortunately I have a backup file I can read in other programs, but the
backup displays the changed way in Excel and the right way in
Appleworks. WHY!!!
